Key performance indicator (KPI)

A key performance indicator (KPI) is a specific, measurable metric chosen in advance to track progress toward a defined goal, letting performance be judged against a target rather than by feel.

Quick facts

  • Also known as: KPI
  • Category: Metrics & analytics
  • Applies to: X · Instagram · Facebook · LinkedIn · TikTok
  • Key trait: a KPI is tied to a specific goal and a specific target, which distinguishes it from a metric tracked just for general visibility

What is a KPI on social media?

Not every number a platform reports is a KPI. Impressions, likes, and follower count are all metrics, raw numbers a dashboard shows, but a metric only becomes a KPI once it's deliberately chosen to represent progress toward a specific goal, with a target attached. If the goal is brand awareness, reach and impressions might be the KPI. If the goal is community growth, follower growth rate might be the KPI. If the goal is driving sales, conversion rate or cost per acquisition (CPA) is the KPI, and engagement, while still worth tracking, is a supporting metric rather than the KPI itself.

This distinction matters because tracking the wrong number as a KPI can make a campaign look successful when it isn't actually achieving the underlying goal. A post can generate huge engagement, likes and comments, while doing nothing for actual sales; if the real objective was revenue, engagement was never the right KPI to optimize for in the first place.

How are social media KPIs chosen?

KPIs are usually selected by working backward from a business goal, then picking the metric that most directly reflects progress toward it, rather than whichever metric is easiest to move or feels most flattering. Common social media KPIs include reach and impressions (for awareness goals), engagement rate and click-through rate (for consideration goals), and conversion rate, cost per acquisition, and return on ad spend (for revenue goals), roughly matching the same stages used to describe a marketing funnel. A KPI is also usually paired with a specific target and timeframe, for example "grow engagement rate by 15% over the next quarter," rather than left as an open-ended number to simply watch.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a KPI and a regular metric? Every KPI is a metric, but not every metric is a KPI. A metric is any number a platform tracks; a KPI is a metric specifically chosen to represent progress toward a defined goal, usually with a target attached.

Can a brand have more than one KPI at a time? Yes, though it's usually best practice to limit KPIs to a small number tied to the most important current goals, rather than trying to treat every available metric as equally important.

Why is engagement rate not always a good KPI? Because it measures interaction, not necessarily business outcome. High engagement can happen without driving the underlying goal, like sales or leads, so it's often better used as a supporting signal than as the sole KPI for a revenue-focused campaign.
