What is dark social? Meaning & how to track it

. 3 min read

Dark social

Dark social is the sharing of content through private channels, such as messaging apps, direct messages, email, and text messages, where analytics tools cannot see the original source, so the resulting visits usually show up as "direct" traffic.

Quick facts

  • Also known as: private sharing, dark traffic
  • Category: Metrics & analytics
  • Applies to: WhatsApp · Messenger · Instagram DMs · X DMs · LinkedIn messages · Telegram · Slack · email · SMS
  • Coined by: Alexis C. Madrigal, The Atlantic, October 2012
  • Key trait: the share is real, but the referral data is missing

What is dark social?

When someone copies a link and pastes it into a WhatsApp group or a Slack channel, the person who clicks it usually arrives on the website without any referral information attached. Analytics tools then label that visit as "direct," as if the visitor typed the URL by hand or used a bookmark. For a short homepage URL that might be believable. For a long article URL, it clearly is not.

That observation is where the term came from. In October 2012, Alexis C. Madrigal, then a senior editor at The Atlantic, noticed that a large share of visits to long, complex article URLs were being classified as direct traffic. He called this invisible sharing "dark social" in the article "Dark Social: We Have the Whole History of the Web Wrong," arguing that private, person-to-person sharing was much bigger than public social sharing suggested.

Why dark social matters

Dark social means your social media strategy is probably working better than your reports show. A post that gets modest public engagement might be screenshotted, forwarded, and pasted into private chats hundreds of times. Because that traffic is misattributed to "direct," teams can underinvest in the content and channels that actually drive awareness and sales. It also makes return on investment calculations less accurate, which matters when you are trying to prove the value of social, for example when you drive traffic to your landing pages through an X campaign and need to know which posts actually sent visitors.

Buyers increasingly research in private groups and messaging apps before ever clicking an ad, so a strategy that relies only on last-click attribution will miss a big part of the customer journey. Content that is easy to share privately, such as useful checklists, short videos, and quotable insights, often does its best work in the dark, which is one reason word of mouth plays such a big role in building brand awareness and loyalty on social media.

How to measure dark social

You can't track it completely, but you can shine some light on it:

Tag every link you share: a link with UTM parameters keeps its tracking data when someone copies and pastes it into a private chat.

Add share buttons for messaging apps: "Share to WhatsApp" or "Copy link" buttons can append tracking parameters automatically.

Watch direct traffic to deep pages: direct visits to long URLs are a strong hint of private sharing.

Ask "How did you hear about us?": self-reported attribution on signup or checkout forms often reveals DMs, group chats, and word of mouth.

How Circleboom helps with dark social

With the built-in UTM builder in the Circleboom Publish tool, you can add a source, medium, and campaign to any link directly in the post composer, and shorten it in the same step. When your followers copy that link into a DM or a group chat, the tracking parameters travel with it, so more of those private shares show up under the right campaign instead of disappearing into direct traffic. Frequently asked questions

Is dark social bad? No. It is simply private sharing, which is often a sign of highly trusted recommendations. The only problem is measurement.

Why is it called "dark"? Because the activity is invisible to analytics, not because it is secret or harmful.

Does a shared screenshot count as dark social? Yes, in a broad sense. Screenshots shared in chats spread awareness without any trackable click at all, which is even harder to measure than pasted links.
